ammunition belt

A belt of ammunition for a belt-fed machine gun or gatling gun.

The bullets are held in chains of disintegrating metal links which can be connected to form belts of any length. These disposable links are discarded (along with the empty shell casings) upon firing.

Not to be confused with a bandolier, which is a belt containing bullets worn on a person's chest, or an ammunition pouch, which is a pouch for holding ammunition that may be worn around the waist.
