The Shēngxiào (Chinese: 生肖), better known in English as the Chinese Zodiac, is a scheme that relates each year to an animal and its reputed attributes, which, combined with the 5 Chinese elements (fire, water, earth, wood, metal), creates a 60-year cycle. Many other Asian nations have adopted the Chinese Zodiac as well, sometimes with slight changes.
Unlike the Western zodiac, it has no relation to the constellations on the ecliptic.
The twelve animals
- Zi (子): The Rat.
- Chou (丑): The Ox.
- Other version: Water buffalo (Vietnam).
- Yin (寅): The Tiger.
- Other version: Leopard (Kazakhstan)
- Mao (卯): The Rabbit.
- Other version: Cat (Vietnam).
- Chen (辰): The Dragon.
- Other version: Snail (Kazakhstan)
- Si (巳): The Snake.
- Wu (午): The Horse.
- Wei (未): The Goat.
- Shen (申): The Monkey.
- You (酉): The Rooster.
- Xu (戌): The Dog.
- Hai (亥): The Pig.
